IFTA Sticker and IFTA License: How to Register Your Truck

Before you ever fill in a quarterly return, you need an IFTA licence and the pair of decals that go with it. What is an IFTA sticker and IFTA licence?

IFTA (the International Fuel Tax Agreement) lets a carrier report and pay fuel tax to every jurisdiction it drives through via one quarterly return filed with its base state, instead of registering separately in each one. To take part, you apply for an IFTA account and licence through your base jurisdiction's IFTA program, usually run out of the state department of revenue or department of transportation. Once approved, you get two things: an IFTA licence (a certificate you keep a copy of in each qualifying vehicle) and IFTA decals, sometimes called IFTA stickers, one for each side of the cab.

The licence and decal aren't optional extras. They're proof to any roadside inspector, in any member jurisdiction, that your fuel tax account is active and in good standing. Drive without a valid IFTA sticker and you can be issued a trip permit on the spot, along with a fine, even if your paperwork is otherwise fine.

Do I need an IFTA sticker for one truck?

Yes, in most cases, even for a single truck. IFTA registration requirements are based on the vehicle, not fleet size. You typically need an IFTA account if your qualified motor vehicle operates in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions and either has a gross or registered gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds, or has three or more axles regardless of weight. A single owner-operator running one truck across state lines meets that definition just as much as a fifty-truck fleet does.

The one common exception is if you only ever run within your base state and never cross a jurisdiction line. In that case you may not need IFTA at all, though you should still confirm the rule with your base state's motor carrier or IFTA program office, since intrastate exceptions and definitions of a qualified vehicle can differ slightly by jurisdiction.

What you need before you apply

IFTA applications ask for broadly the same information everywhere, but the exact form and portal depend on your base jurisdiction. Having everything gathered before you start saves a second trip back to the application.

Your base jurisdiction is generally where your qualified vehicles are registered, where your operational records are kept, and where you accrue some actual mileage, not just wherever is administratively convenient. How to get an IFTA sticker and licence: step by step

1. Confirm your base jurisdiction, the state where your qualified vehicle is registered and your records are kept.
2. Gather your USDOT number, business details, tax ID, and vehicle information from the table above.
3. Find your base state's IFTA registration page, usually hosted by the department of revenue or department of transportation, and complete the online or paper application.
4. Pay the registration fee. This is typically a modest flat charge per set of decals, though it varies by jurisdiction, so check the current fee on your state's IFTA page rather than assuming a figure.
5. Wait for approval and receive your IFTA licence and decals. Processing is often a matter of days for online applications, but can run longer for paper submissions or during peak renewal periods, so apply with some buffer before you plan to run interstate.
6. Keep a copy of the IFTA licence in the cab of every qualified vehicle, and affix one decal to each side of the cab exterior.
7. Renew before the licence expires, typically at the end of the calendar year, and reorder decals for any new or replacement vehicle added during the year.

Once you're registered, you don't need to reapply every quarter. The licence and decals generally carry you through the calendar year, and after that you'll renew rather than starting from scratch, as long as your account stays in good standing.

Where does the IFTA decal go?

You get two identical decals per vehicle, and each one goes on the exterior of the cab, one on the driver's side and one on the passenger's side, usually on the lower part of the door or just behind it. Both decals need to be visible and legible during a roadside inspection. Some carriers also keep a spare set in the glovebox in case a decal peels or fades before renewal, since a missing sticker can trigger the same enforcement response as never having registered at all.

Keeping your IFTA account in good standing
